Overview & History

From regional neurosurgery unit to the world's most experienced brain surgery destination — the story of Beijing Tiantan Hospital's seven-decade ascent.

Beijing Tiantan Hospital (北京天坛医院) was established in 1956 as a dedicated neurosurgery unit under Capital Medical University. From its earliest days, the hospital concentrated exclusively on diseases of the brain, spine, and peripheral nervous system — an unusual specialisation that allowed it to accumulate extraordinary expertise over seven decades.

Today Tiantan is the designated host institution for the National Neurological Disease Medical Center, the National Neurological Disease Quality Control Center, and the Beijing Neurological Disease Medical Center. Its neurosurgery department performs more than 30,000 cranial operations annually — more than any other hospital in the world — and its outcomes for glioma, cerebrovascular malformation, and skull-base tumour resection are benchmark standards cited in international neurosurgical literature.

Patient Testimonials

"I was diagnosed with a glioblastoma in Canada and told surgery was high-risk. At Tiantan, the surgeons had performed thousands of similar cases. They achieved a complete resection with intraoperative MRI guidance. I am two years post-surgery and doing well."
Robert L. Toronto, Canada — Glioblastoma Surgery
★★★★★
"Drug-resistant epilepsy for 20 years. Tiantan's epilepsy team identified the focus, performed the resection, and I have been seizure-free for 18 months. The Medicsino team translated everything — I never felt lost."
Emma N. Auckland, New Zealand — Epilepsy Surgery
★★★★★
"Trigeminal neuralgia surgery cost me USD 7,500 at Tiantan. My US surgeon quoted USD 55,000 for the same procedure. The clinical outcome was identical — actually faster recovery because of their minimally invasive approach."
Michael S. Houston, USA — Microvascular Decompression
